Remote Access Technologies Overview

CISSP

  1. Asynchronous Dial-Up Access
    • Description: A traditional method of connecting to the internet using a public switched telephone network (PSTN) to access an Internet Service Provider (ISP).
    • Usage: Widely used for internet access before the advent of broadband connections.
  2. Integrated Services Digital Network (ISDN)
    • Function: A communication protocol that allows telephone lines to carry multiple types of traffic, including data and voice.
    • Types:
      • BRI (Basic Rate Interface): Typically used for residential and small business applications.
      • PRI (Primary Rate Interface): Used for larger organizations, offering higher data rates.
    • Benefit: Provides more reliable and faster connections compared to traditional dial-up.
  3. xDSL (Digital Subscriber Line)
    • Function: Uses regular telephone lines to provide high-speed digital access.
    • Benefit: Offers faster internet speeds compared to traditional dial-up, using existing telephone infrastructure.
  4. Cable Modems
    • Function: Provide internet access via a single shared coaxial cable.
    • Security Concern: Considered insecure because traffic is not inherently filtered or protected by firewalls, making it susceptible to unauthorized access.

These technologies represent various methods for remote access, each with its own set of advantages, limitations, and security considerations.
